Sai Vikranth Pendem (Chalmers University of Technology), Presents Groundbreaking Research on Hybrid FSO–THz Technologies at ICTON 2025 in Barcelona

Barcelona, Spain — July 10, 2025

Sai Vikranth Pendem, Doctoral Candidate (DC6) of the Empower6G project, recently presented pioneering research at the prestigious International Conference on Transparent Optical Networks (ICTON) 2025, held in Barcelona, Spain. The paper, titled “Hybrid FSO–THz Technologies for 6G Access Networks: A Cost-Availability Trade-off Analysis”, offers a fresh perspective on the future of 6G connectivity.

The study, authored by Sai Vikranth Pendem (Chalmers University of Technology), Carlos Natalino (Chalmers), Antonio Napoli (Nokia), and Paolo Monti (Chalmers), explores the integration of Free Space Optics (FSO) and Terahertz (THz) technologies in next-generation access networks. By conducting a detailed cost-availability trade-off analysis using a real-world network model, the research identifies critical performance and cost targets required for the practical deployment of hybrid FSO-THz transceivers.

The presentation received strong interest from attendees, emphasizing the growing relevance of hybrid optical-wireless solutions in shaping the future of ultra-fast, resilient, and scalable 6G networks.

This contribution marks another milestone for the Empower6G project as it continues to push the boundaries of next-generation wireless research.
